What Is a KuneKune Pig?
The KuneKune (pronounced "cooney cooney") is a small, rotund breed of domestic pig originating from New Zealand. The name comes from the Māori language and means "fat and round" — an apt description of this loveable breed. Once nearly extinct, the KuneKune has experienced a remarkable revival and is now prized by smallholders, hobby farmers, and pig enthusiasts around the world.
Physical Characteristics
- Size: Adults typically weigh between 60–200 kg (130–440 lbs), making them significantly smaller than commercial breeds.
- Build: Short-legged, round-bodied, with a short, upturned snout.
- Coat: Can be long or short-haired in a wide range of colours including black, white, ginger, cream, and multi-coloured.
- Wattles: A distinctive feature — KuneKunes have two small fleshy tassels (called piri piri) hanging from their lower jaw, though not all individuals carry them.

KuneKunes are widely regarded as one of the most docile and human-friendly pig breeds in the world. They are curious, calm, and genuinely enjoy human company, which makes them excellent for families, smallholdings, and even as companion animals.
Unlike many other pig breeds, KuneKunes are not known for rooting aggressively or escaping enclosures — two traits that make pig keeping significantly easier. Their calm nature also means they are far less likely to become aggressive, even boars and sows with piglets.

One of the most practical advantages of the KuneKune is its ability to thrive on pasture grass.
